United Kingdom Government has recently conducted a detailed research on the present and projected gaps in the ‘Data Skills’ in the country. The findings of this study have been published in a comprehensive report.

For this, they have looked at the space holistically as “any skill that involves the gathering, interpretation and communication of data, often as part of a team”. These skills cover a range of technical (hard) skills and generalist (softer) skills relating to good work practices in the context of data.

The report identifies comprehensive list of skills that are required and the ones that are lacking. Apart from the hard technical skills, this also identifies key soft skills required for the Data analysis space like communication, adaptability, critical thinking, analytical mindset and project management.

The report also points out that the industry is primarily looking at internal training as the means of skills development, with only small percentage looking towards universities to provide them.

As the report concludes, “Education and training providers have a critical role to play in shaping curricula that looks to address these particular skill gaps and to offer a diversity of training options that also cater to those at lower price points”.
